What are Dental Veneers?

Veneers are a common and effective cosmetic dental treatment that involves adhering thin shells of tooth-colored porcelain to the front-facing surface of the teeth in order to mask aesthetic imperfections. The durable, natural looking materials used can conceal a single damaged tooth or a mouthful of cosmetic flaws. Dental veneers are generally used to address teeth that are:

  • Chipped
  • Gapped
  • Misaligned
  • Misshapen
  • Discolored
  • Undersized

The Process of Getting Veneers

Dental veneers can be placed in as little as two appointments. During your first visit, we will carefully examine your smile to ensure that it is healthy enough to support veneers. Once this is concluded, we’ll prepare your teeth by removing a small amount of protective enamel to make room for your veneers. Impressions are then taken of the teeth to be sent to the dental laboratory. This is where your final restorations will be custom crafted.

In the meantime, you will be given a temporary set of veneers to both protect your teeth and help you get used to what your veneers will feel like. Once your custom ones are ready, you can return to the dental office for the final placement.

The Benefits of Veneers

Veneers have become increasingly popular because of their numerous benefits. Here are just some of the most prominent:

  • Natural Appearance: The porcelain that’s used to make veneers appears just like natural tooth enamel.
  • Straightforward Procedure: Getting veneers typically requires just two visits to the dental office.
  • Brighter Smile: Dental veneers are more resistant than natural teeth when it comes to staining. You won’t need to worry about discoloration as a result of coffee, red wine, or other dark-colored foods and beverages.
  • Long-Lasting: Veneers can last for upwards of 15 years when properly maintained.

Veneer FAQs

Can Veneers Fix Crooked Teeth?

If your teeth overlap, braces are a great option, but they aren’t the only one. In fact, veneers have helped countless patients struggling with mild overcrowding and spacing issues! If we decide together that this is the best cosmetic dental treatment for you, then we will create a straighter, more aesthetically pleasing smile with thin sheaths of dental porcelain. One of the best parts is that the entire treatment process can be completed in two or three visits instead of two or three years (which is often the case with traditional braces).

Are Veneers Permanent?

Sadly, veneers are not permanent. They are, however, one of the longest-lasting cosmetic dental treatments; they can last for 10+ years with the proper care and maintenance. That starts with the basics, like brushing and flossing consistently, and extends to exercising caution with crunchy foods, wearing a mouthguard during sports, and coming to our office every six months for a checkup and cleaning.

Is There Anything I Can’t Eat with Veneers?

In an effort to keep your veneers (and the teeth underneath them) in pristine condition, there are a few foods we recommend avoiding. Hard pretzels, peanut brittle, and raw almonds are great examples because they can lead to a serious chip or crack. Extremely sticky treats, like taffy and caramel-filled candies, should also be avoided since they can pull on your veneers, causing them to come loose or fall out completely. To put it simply, even though there aren’t any strict dietary restrictions, it’s best to stick to mostly softer, more nutrient-dense foods, like cottage cheese, oatmeal, and plain yogurt.

Will I Still Be Able to Drink Coffee with Veneers?

Since veneers are crafted from stain-resistant materials, like dental porcelain, you don’t have to give up your morning or afternoon cup of coffee! That said, we do encourage our patients to make a few smile-friendly changes, like using a straw and not adding sugar. It’s also a good idea to brush your teeth about 20 minutes after you’re done or, if it’s not possible, rinse your mouth thoroughly with clean water.

How Many Veneers Will I Need?

At your consultation, we will cover a lot of ground, including determining if veneers in Jefferson are the best smile-enhancing treatment for you. If the answer is “yes,” then we also need to determine how many are needed to achieve the results you desire. If you want to fix a noticeable chip, then you may only need one. If you want a completely new look, then 10-12 may be necessary.

Is There Anyone Who Shouldn’t Get Veneers?

Yes, there are some patients who aren’t candidates for veneers, including those who have an active infection in their gums. If that’s the case for you, don’t get discouraged – we offer several restorative treatments at our office, including periodontal therapy. As a result, achieving a smile that’s as healthy as it is beautiful is quite convenient!
